What should I consider before buying a floor lamp?

Lighting needs – Decide between bright task lighting for reading or soft ambient light for relaxation. Room & natural light – Consider how much natural light the room gets and whether extra lighting is needed. Size & scale – Ensure the lamp’s height and base size fit your room and existing furniture.

How many products do I need in a living room?

Room Size: Larger living rooms may require more than one floor lamp to evenly distribute light, while smaller rooms might only need one. Lighting Purpose: Consider the function of the lighting. If you want ambient lighting, one floor lamp in a central location may suffice. For task lighting (like reading or working), you may need additional lamps placed strategically around the room. Room Layout: A well-lit room typically benefits from multiple light sources to avoid shadows and create a balanced atmosphere. If your living room has several seating areas, you may want a lamp near each seating spot. Aesthetic Preference: Some people choose to have multiple floor lamps to add a decorative touch or highlight specific areas of the room, such as corners or art pieces.

What bulb brightness do I need?

It depends on the purpose – For reading or task lighting, choose bulbs between 800–1200 lumens (equivalent to a 60–75W incandescent bulb). For ambient lighting (mood or general light), 400–800 lumens is usually enough. Consider the shade and placement – A dark or thick lampshade will absorb more light, so you might need a brighter bulb. If the lamp is in a corner or far from where you sit, go for a higher lumen level. Use warm white LEDs – Choose LED bulbs with a colour temperature of 2700K–3000K for a cosy, inviting glow. LEDs are energy-efficient and long-lasting, ideal for daily use .

What kinds of floor lamps are there?

When choosing a floor lamp for your home, there’s a wide range of designs to suit different spaces and needs. Some of the most common types include: Torchiere lamps – These stand tall and slim, casting light upwards to softly illuminate a room. They’re ideal for smaller areas or spaces with lower ceilings. Reading lamps – Built for focus and practicality, these provide targeted light for reading or detailed work. Many have adjustable arms or goosenecks so you can direct the beam exactly where it’s needed. Tree lamps – With several arms or branches, each holding its own bulb, these offer flexible, multi-directional lighting and a striking visual appeal. Tripod lamps – Supported by three legs, they often bring a modern or industrial touch. They take up a bit more floor space but make a strong design statement. Arc lamps – Featuring a sweeping curved arm, these lamps reach out elegantly to provide overhead light—perfect beside a sofa, dining table, or workspace. Each type adds its own character and function, making it easy to find one that fits both your lighting needs and interior style.

What’s the ideal height for a floor lamp?

Choosing the right height depends on your room and furniture. As a rule of thumb, the bottom of the lampshade should sit roughly at eye level when you’re seated, giving the best light for reading or relaxing. For most homes, that works out to about 58–64 inches in height. If you’ve got high ceilings or a spacious room, a taller lamp will help balance the proportions. In smaller rooms or spaces with lower ceilings, something shorter will feel more in scale. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer – the perfect height depends on how the lamp complements your furniture, your room’s layout, and the look you’re going for.

Should I go for a floor lamp with a shade or without one?

It really comes down to the type of light and look you’re after. A lamp with a shade softens and diffuses the light, reducing glare and creating a gentle, welcoming glow — great for general lighting or a cosy atmosphere. Shades also help direct light for practical use, such as reading or crafting, while keeping it easy on the eyes. A lamp without a shade, on the other hand, gives off a brighter, more exposed light that can make a room feel crisp and modern. It works well if you want maximum brightness or an industrial-style edge. In the end, it’s a matter of preference — think about how you’ll use the lamp, how bright you want the space to be, and what suits your interior style best.

Can floor lamps be dimmed?

Yes, plenty of floor lamps come with dimming options, allowing you to control how bright or soft the light feels. Some models include a built-in dimmer switch, while others can be used with an external dimmer. Just make sure to check the lamp’s specifications to confirm it’s compatible with the dimmer type you plan to use. Dimming your lamp is a simple way to create a relaxed, inviting mood and can also help cut down on energy use. If your chosen lamp doesn’t support dimming, you could always fit it with a smart bulb — many offer adjustable brightness and even colour control via an app or voice command.
