1. Check for Signs of Age

• Patina and Wear: Genuine vintage lights usually have signs of oxidation, small scratches, or faded finishes. These are naturally developed over decades and hard to replicate perfectly.

• Materials: Older lights are often made from brass, iron, or ceramic—feel for weight and texture. Cheap vintage-style pieces might use lightweight alloys or plastic.

• Wiring: Original wiring may look cloth-covered, brittle, or frayed. If the wiring is modern PVC or new-looking, it’s likely been replaced or is a reproduction.

2. Look for Manufacturer Marks or Labels

• Many authentic pieces from the 1920s–1970s have maker’s stamps, engraved logos, or metal labels either on the base plate, inside the fixture, or behind mounting brackets.

• Brands like Holophane, Revo, GEC, or Strand Electric (UK examples) often included identifying marks.

• Absence of any mark doesn’t always mean fake—but branded pieces are easier to verify.

3. Construction Details and Craftsmanship

• • Examine screws, joints, and fasteners. Vintage lights often use slotted screws, whereas modern replicas usually use Phillips head screws.

  • Handmade glass, enamel shades, and forged metalwork are signs of vintage craftsmanship.

  • Modern reproductions may feel lighter or flimsier, with visible casting seams or uniform finishes that look too “perfect.”

• Dust regularly with a soft cloth; use mild soap and water sparingly—avoid harming patina.

• For brass elements, use non-abrasive polish if desired, but consider leaving natural patina untouched.

• Lampshades: clean glass carefully with glass cleaner; feather-dust crystal pieces gently.

1. Socket Compatibility

• Most vintage wall lights use standard bulb fittings such as E27 (Edison screw) or B22 (bayonet). Modern LED bulbs are widely available in these formats, making them physically compatible.

• However, very old fixtures (pre-1950s) may have non-standard sockets, so you may need an adapter or socket replacement.

2. Electrical Safety & Voltage

• LED bulbs require stable voltage (usually 220–240V in the UK). If the vintage light has original wiring, it may be degraded or unsafe.

• It’s strongly recommended to have the fixture rewired or tested by an electrician, especially if it hasn’t been used in decades.

• Do not use LED bulbs in fittings with old transformers or dimmer circuits unless they are LED-compatible.

3. Heat Management and Fixture Design

• LED bulbs generate less heat than incandescent bulbs, which is beneficial for old or delicate fixtures.

• However, ensure the LED bulb doesn’t sit too tightly in enclosed or narrow glass shades, as poor ventilation can shorten the LED's lifespan.

• If your fixture has a closed design, consider using LEDs specifically rated for enclosed fixtures.

4. Aesthetic Considerations

• For a truly vintage look, use filament-style LED bulbs that mimic the warm glow of old incandescent or Edison bulbs.

• Choose warm colour temperatures (e.g., 2200K–2700K) to match the period aesthetic.

• Dimmable LED bulbs are available, but make sure both the bulb and dimmer switch are LED-compatible to avoid flickering.
